Games That Actually Nailed Touch Controls

Games That Actually Nailed Touch Controls

May 9, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Most mobile games fight their own controls. Tiny virtual buttons, thumbs covering half the screen — you know the feeling. So when a game gets it right, it stands out immediately.

Driftline Canyon is my go-to example. Two thumbs, no clutter, and steering that feels like it's reading your intent rather than your exact finger position. That's the goal.

Emberwake Tactics takes a different route: it slows everything down and gives you previews, so precision matters less than planning. Both approaches work because they respect the screen's limits.

The lesson for developers is old but true — design for the hand holding the phone, not the mouse you wish players had.
